  General Notes:

[Pearson.GED]

George and Naomi went to Richmond River from Marshal Mount in 1886, bought land at Cowlong that had been selected by Michael Warren, where they erected a slab and shingle hut, this proved inadequit housing for the family so a bigger house was built. They also played their part in dairy farming of the "Big Scrub" area often carrying supplies from Ballina before the trading villages of Eltham and Booyong were established. They had 11 children plus another three who died as infants. Of the fourteen children, eight were born at home , Mrs William Alexander being the midwife.
The rations were helped along by the addition at times of kangaroo-tail and paddymelon-tail soup and pigeons. Occasionally a beast was killed, the neighbours taking turns and sharing the meat. The orchard was particularly large and fruitful, there being a great variety of fruits especially the peaches of which the neighbours used to be given bagfuls. There were no stoves but cooking was done in an open fireplace and camp oven.
Oat and rye grass were fed off and then allowed to go to seed. Then Hindu's were employed to cut it with reaping hooks or sythes after which the seed was threshed with flails, consisting of two sickles secured at each end of a leather strap. A tarpaulin made of bags sewn together caught the seed which was sieved and sold. In those days there were many swaggieson the track and particularly the "Black Maries" who came around selling needles and cottons and odds and ends from one bundle and materials from another bundle. George and Naomi were both buried in the Wollongbar Cemetery.
