  General Notes:

The parish of Stoke Damerel was known in the Domesday Book as "Stoches" and the manor was held prior to that by the Saxon, Brismar. When it was seized by King William I in 1066 it was given to the Norman, Robert de Albamarle, form whose name
it gradually became anglicised to its present form. It is said that the manor at that time was occupied by only 25 people, as against the 7 in nearby Sutton (Plymouth).

Over time the manor was held by the families of Courtenay, Kemiell, Branscombe, Britt and Wise. In 1667 Sir Edward Wise sold the manor to Sir William Morice, Knight, for £11,050. Sir William was Secretary of State to King Charles II and was
instrumental in restoring him to the throne after the Civil War. Upon Sir William's death his son, also William, succeeded him. There were also two daughters, Catherine and Barbara, the first marrying Sir John St Aubyn of Clowance in west
Cornwall in 1725 the the second marrying Sir John Molesworth in 1728. When the younger Sir William Morice, Baronet, died in 1749 he had no issue and the title became extinct. His estates was therefore divided and Stoke Damerel passed through
his sister, Catherine, to her husband Sir John St Aubyn.

Stoke Damerel appears in the General Registrar's records as a Registration District. It had five sub-districts, Clowance, Morice, St Aubyn, Stoke and Tamar. It was allocated volume number IX between 1837 and 1851 and volume 5b from then until
the District was renamed Devonport from November 9th 1898.

Samuel Stumbles was a tailor and lived at 47 Exeter Street, Plymouth. In 1840, some time after the death of his first wife Amelia, Samuel migrated to Australia in 1840, leaving Plymouth on the 'Brighton' on 30 August 1840 and arriving in Adelaide on 13 December. He subsequently travelled on to Sydney. LATER RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT AMELIA DID TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA WITH SAMUEL BUT PROBABLY DIED SOON AFTER.

On 30 June 1843 he paid £24 for a block of land in Franklyn Road, Gelebe, which he sold just over three years later, in October 1846, for £125. He then bought a property in Francis St, Woollomooloo (part of the Riley estate initially developed
by James Slatyer) for £84. He worked from there as a tailor.

He sold this property on 9 January 1851 (for £174) and moved to Wollongong, where he bought a ¼-acre block ffor £85 at Garden Hill on 26 August 1856. He sold this land on 4 August 1862 for £150. During the 1850s he also acquired land in
Harbour St, Wollongong and at Fairy Meadow (where the Parsons family lived).

His estate was valued at £356.

Marilyn Mifsud later notes:
The shipping list
<http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/BSA/1840Brightman.gif> has my ancestors William John Tucker WESTLAKE and wife Catherine nee Stumbles coming to Holdfast Bay (Glenelg), SA, and on the same ship are her brother Samuel and his wife Amelia and son Charles(died on voyage). I have searched SA bdm and found no further record of any STUMBLES, so I guess the child was buried at sea, before their arrival 13th December 1840. Your record suggests that Amelia died before Samuel left for Australia, but this would suggest she made it here, but they must have left immediately for Sydney (?) As for Samuel the younger, no record of him taking the journey, so perhaps he died in infancy, but he would have had to be born before 1840. The shipping list does not indicate that Amelia died on board, either. Catherine's husband William John Tucker WESTLAKE died five years after their arrival. I have sighted his death certificate at SAGHS, and under cause of death is shown the word "decline" ( perhaps TB?)
