Murtagh was a convict who convicted of horse stealing and sentenced to life imprisonment at Kilkenny, Ireland. He arrived in Port Jackson aboard the ship 'Anne' in 1801.
Murtagh worked as a stockman to a Mr Jamison in the Penrith and Richmond areas for ten years, and in 1812 became 'free by servitude'.
Murtagh was granted 40 acres in the Dural area.
