• fact. The first William Thomas Black was born at the farm in Brownsville, Ohio, that his grand-fath er bought after returning successfully from the California Gold Rush. He became an officer a t the builders supply business started by his father, James Morton Black, in Fairmont, West V irginia, where that family moved to at the turn of the century. He also contracted TB, but re covered in Saranac in 1908-1909. He was an avid baseball player and fisherman. Their childre n were Mary Elizabeth, [BO:William Bogardus:BO], and James Morton.
