Ann Jackman notes:
At the age of 24 he was nearly blind. He had enlisted in the 88th Regiment of Foot on 3 January 1813 for unlimited service. He was with a detachment that served in the American War and in Upper Canada around Quebec.
The 88th Regiment arrived in Canada on 3 August 1814 on board the transport ship Cathcart with 58 sergeants, 18 drummers and 854 rank and file. They were very short of equipment and lacked proper food supplies. In the September-December Quarter of 1814 he was transferred from the 2nd Battalion and was sick for two out of the three months as well as the three months to March 1815. At this time he was a Private receiving 6d per day. They returned to England via Ostend a month after the Battle of Waterloo. In the June to September Quarter of 1816 he was in hospital for all three musters. Having been from December 1816 to March 1817 once more in hospital, he was discharged at the age of 24 on 29 July 1817, having served for 4 years and 219 days, "in consequence of the reduction of the establishment of the Regiment and defective vision occasioned by Ophthalmia" on 29 July 1816. His height on discharge was 5´2½½ and he was said to be brown haired, with grey eyes and a fresh complexion.
