  General Notes:

Allan & Liz comment:
I noticed you are researching John Hemson

Where did you source the data?
John HEMSON was born c1789 at Erridge, Sevendocks, England and died ?? (bdm- not indexed). John was married to Louisa ????? born c1791, Sevendock, England.
I am interested in fining out the source to confirm the findings as I am researching Benson which comes from their son John who married Emma Henry after John's first wife Ann Stynes/Steines died.

In http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/hemson/john/36948 it is noted that John Hemson (1814) left England 6th June 1835 & arrived in Australia 6th February 1836. He was convicted at Suffolk Quarter sessions & sentenced to 7 years.

Marilyn Wilson commented:
It's Marilyn Wilson desc from James Hemson 1847 and Harriett Jarrett.
I have seen on ancestry a question that our John Hemson may not be a convict? I remember my Aunt saying he was and then became a Policeman. However his description on arrival is different to the description given by the Police Dept in 1864. Have you found a TOL or Pardon for him? What about permission to marry if he was a convict?

are you sure that John who married Ann was actually John Hemson the convict?
His description on arrival is different to that given by Police description when in the police Force.
Being a convict would he not have to have had permission to marry? I cannot find a TOL or Pardon for him.

This record is one of the entries in the British convict transportation registers 1787-1867 database compiled by State Library of Queensland from British Home Office (HO) records which are available on microfilm as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project.
John was a Gamekeeper, sentenced for stealing a coat. He was described as being;
'5ft 6 ½ inches tall, with ruddy colour, brown eyes and chestnut coloured hair'.
The convict record reports he was uneducated, a Roman Catholic and single. He was tried at Suffolk Quarter Sessions, 21st October 1834.
Name: John Hemson

From Police Records;
Our research officer has found mention of a constable John Hemson at Warialda in a Return of Police employed in the area which was forwarded by the local Police Magistrate to the Colonial Secretarys office in Sydney. Furthermore, there is a brief record of the Police career of a John Hemson contained in one of the Departmental personnel registers of the early 1850s.
In that register he is described as a
'Foot constable, aged 42 (in about 1862). He was 5ft 8 inches in height with hazel eyes, brown hair and a swarthy complexion'. ( a bit different to his previous description )

Also can you remember the Volume codes for BDM? Is A.. births, B… baptisms and C… marriages? I had it written down but can't find it.
Do you have anyway of finding any info on the following registration please;?

I feel this child was born then but probably in Mauritius and not registered until some 4 years later when his mother married and the husband gave him his name. Probably have to get the certificate.

  Research Notes:

Marilyn Wilson notes:
John HEMSON's 2nd marriage was to Emma Sophia HENRY, on 2 October 1850 at Scone, NSW. Emma was born on 27 June 1833 at Upper Pitt Street, and died on 31 January 1905 at Prince Henry Hospital, Little Bay, Sydney NSW.
In searching for Emma's parents I had some difficulty. In a conversation with cousin Barbara Robinson (nee Hemson) she said it has been stated in an article she was 'a woman of colour' so I kept looking, and came across a convict John (Joseph) HENRY arriving here in 1818. Then there was an application to marry a Sophie in 1828. Ok ...but there was no surname. Then some further digging revealed a Sophia came to Australia aboard the ship 'Anne' on 30 June 1825. It sailed from Mauritius.
