3. George Conwell was born in 1853 in Kent, England. He came to Australia with his parents and older
brother in 1854 at age 1.

He married his older brother's widow on the 31^st January 1893 at the Mariners Church, Sydney. They had 2 children together, Ambrose born 1893 and Francis 1896.

In the Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 28^th May 1904 the following was reported

Early yesterday morning information was received by the president of the Board of Health that a man named George Conwell 49 years of age manifested symptoms of plague at this residence, Murray Street, Pyrmont. Dr. Millard was at once despatched to Conwell's house, and a brief examination showed that the man was suffering from plague. Arrangements were at once made for his removal to the Coast Hospital.
It was ascertained that Conwell was employed by the Harbour Trust, and worked on a wharf at Darling Harbour, where a plagued rat was found two days ago. It is stated that he caught a number of rats under the wharf, and is said to have handled a plague-infected rat.

And in the Cootamundra Herald, Wednesday 10^th August 1904

George Conwell, who has been in the hospital suffering from plague between two or three months, was released this morning. There are now no patients suffering from plague in Sydney.

Ellen Rose died on the 4^th October 1907 aged 52 yrs and is buried at Rookwood in the same grave as her son Albert. George died on the 30^th June 1925 at Glebe.
1. Ambrose (Amby) Walter H Conwell was born on the 5^th April, 1893 in Sydney. He married Agnes Eliza Lundie (born 1900) in 1923 at Glebe, Sydney and they had 3 known children, Valerie born 19--, Henry 19-and Francis 19--.

Ambrose lived all his life in Glebe and was a Fireman.

He died in 1973 and Agnes in 1980.


1. Valerie Conwell was born in 19--

In 1958 she was living with her parents at Cowper St, Glebe and was a comptometrist.
She possibly married Alan Dash in 1962.


2. Henry George Conwell was born in 19--. He married Olga Isabell Organ in 1924 and they filed for divorce in 1953 which was finalised in 1954

From at least 1949 to 1954 he was living at 75 Cowper St, Glebe with his parents and was a labourer.
In 1963 he was living at 136 Flinders St, Darlinghurst, Sydney and was a knitter.
In 1972 he was living at Coogee and was a storeman.
In 1980 he was living at 19 Cook St, Randwick and was a storeman.


3. Francis Conwell was born in 19--. Francis married Dorothy June Hutcheson in 1950and they had one known child, Denise Anne born 19--.

From at least 1954 to 1958 they lived at Manly and he was a Plastic Moulder.
In 1963 they lived at Cabramatta and he was a Hoist Driver.
From at least 1972 to 1980 they lived at Mount Pritchard and he was a Hoist Driver.

Francis died on the 26^th November 2010 at Mount Pritchard (Ryerson Index)



2. Francis J Conwell was born on the 21^st July, 1896 and married Grace Zeisser in 1921 at Glebe, Sydney. They had one known child, Grace Frances born 19--.

They lived at Toxteth, West Sydney for all their married life and he was a deck hand.

Francis died on the 9^th November 1954 in Sydney and Grace in 1978



1. Grace Frances Conwell was born in 1924 and married Stanley Claude (Paddy) Winter in 1944. Stanley was born on the 21^st November 1921 at Woy Woy, NSW. They had one known child, Lorraine F. born 19--.

In 1943 Stanley lived in Woy Woy and was in the AIF and was still there in 1949 after his marriage.
In 1954 they lived in Rozelle, Sydney and he was a Mechanic.
From at least 1958 to 1963 they lived in Carlton, and he was a Motor Driver.
In 1968 they lived at Allawah and was a Garage Attendant
In 1972 they lived in Carlton and he was an Attendant.
In 1977 he lived at Ettalong and had no occupation

Stanley died on the 28^th August 1979 at Woy Woy and Grace on the 15^th January 2005 aged 81. She was late of Woy Woy, formerly of Luddenham (Ryerson Index)

George married Ellen Rose Donovan on 31 Jan 1893.¹⁴³⁷ (Ellen Rose Donovan was born on 8 Feb 1855 in The Rocks, Sydney, NSW Australia and died on 6 Aug 1907 in Sydney, NSW Australia ¹²⁸⁴.)
