Robert Bates born August about 1816 Norfolk UK, son of Thomas Bates and Mary Bates of the parish of Hebra, Norfolk. Robert, a married male immigrant brought out by the government at 21 years of age on 18 May 1838 on 'Orontes', was a protestant who could read and write, in good bodily health, strength and probable usefulness, and was described as industrious, honest and sober by William ? Papham of Hackney. Robert was a shoemaker. He arrived with his wife, Mary Ann Turner, needlewoman. They had 7 children, some had died e.g. there was a Thomas Bates born 1846 but I understand that he died as my g grandfather Thomas Bates was born 1848

Robert married Mary Ann Turner on 26 Aug 1835.¹³⁵⁶ (Mary Ann Turner was born on 17 Feb 1815 in Hackney, Greater London, Middlesex England ¹³⁵⁶.)
