Thomas Bates was born about 1845 and died 1918, his parents were Robert Bates and Mary Ann (Turner). They arrived from England 1835-1836. They lost a little son (Robert Bates) on the journey out to Australia, they later had another son also naming him Robert Bates.

Thomas married Emily Jane Britcher, daughter of Charles Britcher and Mary Ann Marianne Bateup, on 4 May 1878 in Armidale, NSW Australia.²⁵⁴ (Emily Jane Britcher was born on 24 Apr 1854 in Sydney, NSW Australia, died on 10 Jul 1941 in Auburn, Sydney, NSW Australia ²⁵⁴ and was buried on 11 Jul 1841.)
