• note. 240 Greg Petersen notes:
The place of origin for Johan Petersen in Denmark seems to be in the Aabenraa municipality, North Slesvig I cannot find a definite link yet but if the cousin is the Appel named in the naturalisation request it would appear he was a Petersen from Klovtoft.
(I drove through the area a couple of years ago and if you blinked you would miss it.)
The Danish census/parish records are very good but due to the 56 years occupation a lot of parish records were lost from the Slesvig/ Holsten area.
Castlemaine (Campbell's Creek dubbed by the locals "little Copenhagen" and Fryerstown) was a Mecca for displaced Danish males working the gold diggings after the disastrous 1864 war with Prussia, Johan was taken there by his cousin.
Johan and his cousin sailed as crew on a British sailing ship this was probably to avoid being conscripted into the German army when he came of age, as the occupied area was forced to give up the Danish language and become German.

Ships Carpenter? Or assistant? Aged 14 years old? Cousin a Carpenter?
Worked their passage on a windjammer English ship? Johan mentioned that he had difficulty with the other crewmen responding to an officers order, answering "alright" as both negative or affirmative
According to a family story he jumped ship in Victoria (Port Phillip?) together with the older cousin, Named Applejack? Not a Danish surname but Appel is, there are many Appels recorded as living at Castlemaine in what was a large Danish community known as Copenhagen & later known as Campbells Creek, family belief is that they were avoiding military service in Prussian army (ironically Johan was told by police during both World War One and Two, not to leave the area, as he was considered to be an enemy alien).
The two cousins stayed for a time in central Victoria, Johan eventually moving further north & settled around Hay in NSW Riverina.
The cousin continued to live in Victoria staying at Castlemaine? Johan visited him there at least once during this time (that the family could recall).
Johan met and married Mary Ann Grindrod in the Hay Church Of England 1884, Johan was Lutheran, Mary Anne was Catholic, Johan is recorded as an employee, at Illiliwah, in Hay. He was next at the nearby property known as Zara.
Johan & family finally settled in Wanganella where he built them a home on the opposite bank to Peppin Station on the Billabong Creek.
Before 1908 (and as perhaps as early as 1889) he was working on the property Booabula
Flo White recalls that he smoked a pipe & enjoyed a walk smoking his cigar down the long driveway & back in the evening after his dinner. He rarely drank but on a hot day would go to the local hotel and in his thick accent say, "yust von beer Yack" or Yohn or whoever was behind the bar.
She also recalled that Johan kept a variety of animals & crops (Dossi clearly recalls grapevines) perhaps this points to his former life as the son of a farmer, he kept and slaughtered pigs making Blood Sausage as well as bacon & cured ham. Johan was used to having his orders obeyed & was strong willed he once told the grandchildren not to pick the oranges until after the third frost, this was a difficult thing to do and they sneaked some when they thought he had gone to bed, he came out as he had forgot his hot water bottle & caught them red handed (although they were terror stricken he said nothing and went back to bed).
Johan died on the 24th July 1941 & was buried by his son James, interred beside his wife in Wanganella Cemetery. This was the last recorded burial at Wanganella Cemetery (Deniliquin Reg. No: 16512/1941)
According to his grandchild Flo White, he was in constant pain & was given a high dose of morphine in order to end his agony, unfortunately the dosage was not enough and he eventually died of natural causes and in great pain. (from prostate cancer?)
Dossi remembers seeing the light on in his room, as she was employed across the river working at the station house and was told of his passing when she returned home that morning.

Document for naturalisation for some Danes including what I believe is (Johan) Petersen and an Appel (Jack? or Jan), the age of Johan at this time would be 13 or 14 which seems to fit with the family recollection of his age when he travelled to Campbell's Creek from the area of Denmark occupied by Prussia (Germany) with his cousin. The family recall that in both world wars Johan was regarded as an enemy alien and had to report fortnightly to the police, this might explain why his son was placed in the ambulance corp instead of the regular army unit.
