ELLEN LOUISE GRAY.
Ellen Louise Gray was born in Embden, 2nd Dec. 1844 and died at North Anson, 16th Jan. 1913. She was the daughter of John and Caroline (Fuller) Caswell. At the age of fourteen she began teaching and later attended the Anson Academy. On 2nd June 1862 she married Mr. Stickney Gray of North Anson, who still survives. With his parents they made their home for four years and afterwards removing to their newly made home on Centre Street, where they have resided continuously for forty six years. To them were born six children, Mrs. Evie Robinson of North Anson, Waldo E. who died in early life, Addie F. Stevens who died in 1889, Uhler A. of Malden, Mass., Allen F. who died in Colorado in 1904, and Marion E. Hartwell of North Anson. There also eight grandchildren.
Last year Mr. and Mrs. Gray celebrated their golden wedding, and received the congratulations of their many friends and acquaintances on their long and happy married life.
Mrs. Gray was a direct descendant from Edward Fuller and wife who crossed the ocean in the Mayflower, and when the Ruth Heald Cragin Chapter of the D.A.R. was formed she was its charter member. From her early years she was also an ardent temperance worker. Mrs. Gray joined the Methodist Episcopal Church over forty years ago, and was a faithful and consistent member, standing by the church and helping in its work as well in its times of need as in its prosperity. From the time the first Methodist church building was erected in the town, she was one of its active and efficient supporters. She will be greatly missed as a regular and constant attendant and a tireless worker. She inherited from her parents that genuine hospitality which made their home the home of early preachers when on their periodical visits and was always the friend and advisor of their successors. She was especially helpful in taking care of sick and many poor families have been recipients of her kindness.
Thirty years ago she contracted a sickness from which she never fully recovered. A serious turn of illness of several weeks duration had ended her leaving apparently in her usual health when she was taken with a paralytic shock which rendered her totally unconscious only for a few hours when she passed peacefully away.
The funeral took place at her home on Saturday, 18th Jan. Rev. A.E. Roberts and C.W. Rogers officiating. The internment took place in the family plot at the north Anson cemetery. The following day the Sunday morning service at her beloved church took the form of a memorial service to its devoted and departed member. The sermon was on the text "He that Believeth in Me Shall Never Die" by the pastor.

Ellen married Stickney Gray, son of Thomas Gray and Sarah Cragin, on 2 Jun 1862. (Stickney Gray was born on 5 Oct 1837 in Anson, Maine USA and died on 15 Jan 1917.)
