  General Notes:

Ken Gray notes:
George Gray (James) Baptised at Newington, New Hampshire, 22nd Nov. 1718; died in Wiscasset, Lincoln county, Main, according to family records, 30th March 1755. His father's deed of Aug. 8th 1758. (Rock. Co. N.H. deeds Vol. 56, p.218) mentions "George Gray's Ayers", confirming that he (George Gray) was then at that time, deceased. He Married, according to the family genealogy, in 1742, Martha James who survived him; this marriage probably took place in or near Barrington or Dover. N.H.
April 1st, 1742, his father James Gray gave him forty acres of land in Barrington, probably as a marriage settlement- (Rock. Co. deeds V.52, P.364). This land was sold by George Gray's oldest son John Gray to William Gray Jr., of Barrington, a cousin, 24th July 1777 (Stratford co. Deeds, V 2, p. 181).
About 1750, George Gray settled in Wiscasset, Maine. March 26th 1750 (51?), he witnessed a deed from Robert Hooper to Moses Gray, of lot No. 22 in the survey, ect. And the same day, bought half of this same lot from the said Moses Gray. (This Moses Gray was probably of the Berwick Maine family, but it is quite possible that he was a son of James and Tamson, i.e. a brother to George, which has some weight in as much as George Gray, while living in New Hampshire, named a son Moses, and that we have no complete list of the children of James and Tamson Gray. In the above mentioned deed (York, v.28, p.238) George is called "bricklayer". While Moses Gray was styled "yeoman".
The administration of the estate was given to John Fairfield, whom it appears, later married the widow Martha. ( Note- The town of Wiscasset was changed by name , to Pownalborough about 1760, which name it bore quite a number of years but was later changed back to the original name "Wiscasset" which is the present name of the town).
The Wiscasset town records show the names of all but one of his children and indicate that the first five were born in Dover, New Hampshire; however the Wiscasset records show several mistakes in dates of births, as compared to family records, and as Barrington and Dover are adjoining towns, we believe that these children were in reality, born in Barrington, and that the Wiscasset records were entered after the death of George, by someone not very familiar with the New Hampshire geography, who remembered Dover as the principal turning point.
