  Research Notes:

Marilyn O'Neill notes:
SHALLOW ADIT

An Adit is a nearly horizontal passage from the surface by which a mine is entered.

The "hamlet" of Shallow Adit is a small area along the B3298 between Scorrier and Mount Ambrose but is not available on the map. Shallow Adit can be found heading from Scorrier towards Redruth and is the area around the Texaco Garage where there is a row of small cornish cottages. It is possible that one of these houses is where the Bray family lived.

All children born to Thomas Bray b1791 were born at Shallow Adit and Jane Trevena's mother Ann died at Shallow Adit (ie Thomas' mother-in-law).

In the 1851 England Census she is living at home in Carharrack with her family
On 16 August 1856 Jane Bray marries William Jolls at St Day. Both were previously unmarried and both made their mark. William Jolls, son of William Jolls, was age 25 and a Miner living in Carharrack, whilst Jane was age 29 and the daughter of Thomas Bray a Miner. Banns were read and the witnesses were recorded as Elizabeth Gregor and John Yeoman.

By the 1881 England Census Jane and William are living at Croft Row, Gwennap where William age 46, is recorded as late Copper Miner who is now blind. Jane is now 51 and not working whilst William Henry age 14 is working at the tin mine.
As the usual lifespan for a miner did not pass his 40's it would appear that William is not working due to both his disability and possibly his age.

Following William's death Jane Jolls/Jowels nee Bray moves in with her son William Henry and his family at Croft Row, Gwennap. As can be seen from the 1891 England Census Jane, age 60, is living on her own means which means that she is probably receiving some form of private pension.
(Note that the first state pension was first paid on 1 January 1909).

In the 1st Qtr of 1892 Jane Bray b1827 dies age 63.
