Marilyn O'Neill notes:
SHALLOW ADIT

An Adit is a nearly horizontal passage from the surface by which a mine is entered.

The "hamlet" of Shallow Adit is a small area along the B3298 between Scorrier and Mount Ambrose but is not available on the map. Shallow Adit can be found heading from Scorrier towards Redruth and is the area around the Texaco Garage where there is a row of small cornish cottages. It is possible that one of these houses is where the Bray family lived.

All children born to Thomas Bray b1791 were born at Shallow Adit and Jane Trevena's mother Ann died at Shallow Adit (ie Thomas' mother-in-law).

Samuel married Elizabeth Sims (b1832) in the parish church after banns, on 31 October 1850 in the parish of Gwennap with St Day both groom and bride made their mark. At the time of the marriage both were residing at Carharrack. Both fathers were miners ie Thomas Bray and Joseph Sims. The witnesses were Richard Whitburn and William Jory.

The 1851 England Census shows the couple living in Carharrack. Samuel is age 20 and working as a copper miner whereas Elizabeth is age 19 - therefore born about 1832.

Samuel Bray was born in 1830 and baptized on 30 January 1831. At the time of his birth the family were living at Shallow Adit. Thomas, his father was employed as a miner.
