"The Pragmatic Pioneers" "Page 181"
Ellen Malone and her sister Anne, were natives of Armagh, Ireland, and were both convicted of stealing silver plate at Monaghan in March 1829, and sentenced to seven years Transportation. Both were described as dressmakers and both sailed from Cork on board the "Asia" on 10th September 1829. On board the "Asia" each convict was issued with two bed gowns, two petticoats, two linen shifts, two linen caps and one check apron, two pairs of stockings and one pair of shoes, two handkerchiefs and one straw hat or bonnet. Ellen and Anne arrived in Port Jackson on 13th January 1830, and were both assigned as convict servants to George Innes a substantial landholder at Bathurst. Ellen was described in the indents as twenty-four years of age, a Catholic, five Foot two Inches in height, a ruddy complexion, black hair and hazel eyes. Her sister Anne was three years younger and three and a half inches taller, and was to marry James

Maynard at Bathurst in 1833. (James Maynard died in 1836, leaving his wife with two small children, George and Daniel to care for).
Henry and Ellen could have started their married life on Brucedale, but they may have returned there later as their son Thomas sometimes claimed that he was born in Sydney, probably in about 1834. Their two known children are the abovementioned Thomas and also Mary, but no record has survived of the baptism of either. The Smiths were certainly living at Brucedale in 1845, when Henry died. The Kelso Church of England burial register states that Henry died on 10th April, but he was not buried until the 27th, indicating that he probably died out in the bush, his body not found for some days. Family legend has it that Henry was killed in a sulky accident, which does fit the circumstances, but it was also suggested that Ellen was killed in the same accident, which does not appear to be so. Ellen Smith's fate is unknown at this time; a comprehensive investigation into all the Ellen Smiths who died during this period has failed to find her. Her children are known to have been reared at Brucedale, so its probable that she died there at a relatively early age, her death not recorded. The last mention of her found to date was when she appears as a witness to the marriage of her daughter Mary to Richard Dignam, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, Bathurst, on 7th July 1851. (Mary Dignam nee Smith married secondly, James Patrick Radford in 1868).
