Arthur went to Melbourne to study for the ministry at Ormond College , but after a severe illness he was advised to go to a drier climate to live, as he suffered from asthma and bronchitis. He went to Cobram in Victoria in 1905 and decided to select land across the Murray River at Berrigan New South Wales and take up farming. His parents and Lottie later moved to Cobram as well, and spent the rest of their lives there.
Arthur Frederick STEER married Elizabeth Anne (Lizzy) DALGLEISH in 1913 and they lived at Daisy Plains, Berrigan.
They had two sons,:
Lindsay Gordon STEER (1915-1983) & Gladys Margaret JOLLY (1921-2005) (5 children)
Ralph Alan STEER (1922- ) & Lynette Ann WALKER (1936 - ) (3 children)
Lizzy died a few days after Ralph's birth. Some time later, Arthur leased his farm and moved to Melbourne , where he cared for his sons with the help of a housekeeper.
In 1926 Arthur married his second wife, Millicent SUTCLIFFE.
