  • Born: Cir 1813
  • Marriage (1): Maria Cave
  • Died: 1882 about age 69

  General Notes:

Adam Bunting notes:
I am descended from Charles England (c 1813 - 1882) who was a very well-known and respected hairdresser, perfumier etc in Bristol, and churchwarden at St Ewen's church. He had just the one son, John Joseph.
You have Charles as marrying Maria Cave. The available records state she was Maria daughter of a Joseph Thomas, who was himself a perfumier.
He adds:
He worked at No 10 Broad Street - which he owned I think. He is grandly described in Mathews' Directory of 1851 as a 'hairdresser and perfumer, peruke and scalp manufacturer' ! I think they must have lived over the shop but later as he prospered, he had a house in Clifton, quite a smart area near the famous suspension bridge whose building he would have witnessed. As you know, his church was the little St Ewen's Church (photos if you Google it) and the local papers year after year report on his election as a churchwarden there. He was also on the board of guardians and later in life became an income tax inspector presumably after he gave up hairdressing.

CHARLES ENGLAND - DEATH NOTICE & OBITUARY
Western Daily Press Sat 15 April 1882

(Death notice p 8 Col 8)
ENGLAND April 13, at St Michael's hill, Mr Chas. England, aged 69.
(Obituary P 7 Col 8)
DEATH OF MR ENGLAND: We regret to announce the death of Mr Charles England, an old Bristol citizen, who was much respected. He had been in feeble health for some time, but his decease, which took place at his residence on St Michael's Hill, yesterday morning, was somewhat sudden. He was in the shop of Mr Henry Hodder, druggist, Broad Street, on Thursday, and the previous day attended at the Guildhall on business connected with his duties as collector of the income tax. Formerly Mr England carried on business as a perfumer at 10, Broad Street, the shop having five years ago been absorbed in Mr Hodder's premises. He was about 68 years of age, and for 30 years filled the office of churchwarden at St Ewen's.
Notes:
(1)Discrepancy of age, 69 in death notice, 68 in obit.
(2)Discrepancy of date of death, 13 April in death notice, 14 in obit.
I take the death notice to be more accurate. I have neither the death certificate nor burial records (maybe there's a gravestone). AGSB
