Edwin was baptised Ebenezer in the Jireh Chapel but was known as Edwin Ebenez e r by the time of his second marriage to his cousin Annie Oliver. A biography p ub lished in 1905 correctly states his date of birth, parentage and the fact tha t h e was the youngest of eight children. He moved to New York in 1850 but mad e hi s home in Chicago three years later where he was very successful as a merch ant t rading in tea, coffee, spices and fruit. He retired from business in 189 0 and mo ved to California where he managed his son's 480 acre ranch outside Tul are.
