  General Notes:

BAPTISM: Laughton parish register.

MARRIAGE: Licence at Lewes, SRS 26, dated 17 October 1781. St Michael, Lewes Parish Records.

East Sussex Land Tax, 1785: William was listed as owner of land in Laughton including Stonecross, Hothlands and Mathews Garden.

POLL BOOK: In 1812, Wm. Shoesmith [sic] of All Saints, Lewes, was listed as not voting in the parliamentary elections.

MI: Buried in the large Morris family tomb at All Saints, Lewes.

WILL: It is clear from his will drawn up on 17 November 1810 and proved 6 February 1815 that William was a wealthy man and that he set considerable store by the Morris family. His sole executor was his son-in-law, Joseph Morris the elder. He left his grandson, Joseph Morris the younger, all his buildings and land "in Laughton in the said county called by the name of Stone Cross Farm being part freehold and part copyhold." He left £500 to each of Joseph Junior's three brothers and £400 to each of his seven sisters. He left his daughter Ann, wife of Joseph Morris the elder, his property in All Saints, Lewes, together with the household goods and furniture therein.

William married Elizabeth Ranger two months before their daughter, Ann, was married at the age of 19. He was living in the All Saints parish of Lewes before 1804.
