• note. 826 General Notes: Robert Richard Dodman was the third son of Robert Dodman and Mary Claxton, he was born in Gateshead in 1867. Robert married Elizabeth Wallis on the 1st. of January 1889 in Terowie where he was working as a loco cleaner in the South Australian Railways. Robert and Elizabeth had 13 children from 1889 until 1908, 5 of whom died very young. Three of the eldest sons went of to the first world war, Robert Earnest and Alfred James went to Gallipolie, then to Europe. Robert Earnest was killed at the battle of Bullercourt, and Alfred came home at the end of the war, their brother Frederick George was in the navy. All three worked in the railways, Robert in the station at Peterborough, Alfred as a locomotive Engineman, ending up as a sububan railcar driver,Frederick George ended up as the Yard Master at Tailem Bend. The following letter was written in the Petersburg local paper in 1934. There was a large gathering of friends at the memorial hall, Gladstone on August 3rd, when the presentation of a framed testimonial was made to Mr. R. R. Dodman on his retirement from the S.A. Railways Department, after 46 years service. Mr. R. Glenn presided, and spoke appreciatively of the excellent services Mr. Dodman had rendered during his lengthy period in the railways, and of the valuable assistance he had been to his fellow employees. On behalf of those present he wished Mr. Dodman and his wife the best of luck for the future. His remarks were ably supported by Messers. J.P. Martin, A.M. Flinn, W Howell, S. G. Coe, R.Pannell, R Kavanagh, A Millard, and D.O'Brien. Mr. Dodman suitably replied. Dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Miss Joan Budge and Mr. C. M. Hall, Mr R. Sneath being M.C. Supper concluded an enjoyable and succesful function.
