DROWNED IN CREEK
Boy Slips into Deep Hole.
Despite inclement weather conditions and the threat of heavy rain, Frank Buck, 13 years of Paddington-road, Oakleigh, on Saturday morning about 11 o’clock invited a companion, Leonard Triplett, 12 years, of Crewe-road, Oakleigh, to have a swim in the storm swollen Scotchman’s Creek, near the corner of Waverley and Warrigul roads, Oakleigh. Triplett began to strip, and was about to take off his clothing when Buck, who had undressed quickly and had entered the stream, slipped into a deep hole. Only able to dog-paddle, he was quickly in difficulties. Triplett, standing on the bank, threw his trousers towards the drowning boy and held on to the braces, but Buck could not get near enough, and after a further desperate effort to get back to shallow water he went under and disappeared.
The alarm was raised, and the police and a doctor were soon on the scene. The boy’s body was brought from the creek, and resuscitation methods were brought into operation for more than half an hour, but without effect, and the body was taken to the morgue.
