General Notes:
John emigrated to Australia as a young adult. There is no evidence to suggest that he travelled with any family members. It is thought he settled immediately in Melbourne. At the time of his marriage he was living in Commercial Rd, Prahran and his occupation is "carrier". He had several occupations between 1863 - 1875: carrier, parcels delivery and grocery and provision dealer. In 1878 he left Melbourne with Ann and his six surviving children (two had died) and tried his luck at farming. He leased 172 acres of Crown Land at Wandin Yallock. This was unsuccessful and he returned to Melbourne during 1881. He became a house painter, now with eight children to support. The 1903 Electorial Roll states John's occupation still as house painter with his son Harry living at home with his parents in partnership with his father. John lived the last three years of his life at his daughter's home at 44 Station St, Camberwell. He was a gifted self taught artist painting mainly landscapes and floral arrangements. He died of throat cancer on 6th January 1921 aged 86 years. His granddaughter Elsie Moad remembered him as a gentle, kindly old man, God fearing and devout in his Christian faith. He was a Methodist.
