  General Notes:

The Lancefield Mercury, Friday, September 3, 1920.
Death of Mat. Burn.
It is our sad duty to chronicle to the death of that fine old gentleman, Mr Mat. Burn, which occurred at his residence, Raglan street, Lancefield, a few hours before we went to press. He had been far from well for about a fortnight, but it was simply a matter of time being told its tale. The funeral is appointed to leave at 2 p.m. tomorrow for the Lancefield Cemetery.
Mr Burn was 90 years of age, born in County Durham, England in the year 1830. He came to Victoria in 1857 (63 years ago) and resided in the Lancefield district ever since. A sketch of his interesting career will appear in our next issue.

The Lancefield Mercury, Friday, September 10, 1920.
The Late Mr Matthew Burn.
In the death of Mr Mat. Burn which occurred at his residence Raglan Street, Lancefield, on 2nd inst, there is removed from our midst one of Victoria's earliest settlers, and a man who was respected by all sections of the community. As briefly referred to in our last issue, the deceased gentleman was a native of Durham, England, where he was born in the year 1930. He was, at the time of his death, thus 90 years of age. With perhaps, one exception, no other man could speak of early Lancefield history as far back as 63 years ago. Mr Burn being a resident of this district for that lengthy period. He came to Victoria in 1837 and went to live at Rochford. His first occupation upon arrival here was that of a bullock driver, and he could relate many interesting experiences along the track to Bendigo and Melbourne prior to the building of the railway. A few years later he settled on the farm at Rochford now occupied by Mr J Harley and whilst there - on December 29, 1865 - he married a Miss Joan Dixon, of Goldie a sister of Mrs Hiscock and the late Mrs. Chas. Mustey. His wife, who died in February of 1915, was a native of Scotland. It is of interest to note that the marriage ceremony was performed by the late Rev. A. Lind at "The Manse",  Lancefield.
Relinquishing farming pursuits, Mr Burn went to live at North Lancefield in a house on Main road in Mr R, Edward's paddock, and later resided in Dundas street near the Commercial Hotel. All that remains to mark the sites of those buildings is an old well and, in the case of the latter, a poplar tree. He lived, however for the greater part of his three score and three in this district in the building he occupied at the time of his death, and which at one time was a bakers shop.
Mr Burn was really a carpenter by trade and, after a little variety, profitable though it was, in the way of bullock driving and farming, he returned to the trade. With the exception of one house, we believe, he either witnessed or took part in the erection of every house in the Lancefield district. He was recognised as a splendid tradesman, and consequently his services were eagerly sought after. He was the father of five children viz: Annie (deceased) Christopher (New Zealand) Mrs. J. Henderson (Footscray) Robert (Port Melbourne) and Mrs Stribbles (Lancefield).
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Lancefield Cemetery. The Rev. J. Francis read the burial service, and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Messrs Houlihan and Currie. Messrs R. Kirkwood, D. Slattery, W. M'Intosh and P. Walsh were the coffin bearers.

Matthew married Joan Dixon, daughter of Christopher Dixon and Jane (Jeanie) Armstrong, in 1865 in Victoria Australia. (Joan Dixon was born on 30 Jul 1842 in Canonbie, Dumfries, Scotland UK and died in 1915 in Lancefield, Victoria Australia.)
