William Henry and his brother Justin bought into the Wairaki Station in Southland about 1859, Justin had earlier become involved with stations in Canterbury, but there is doubt whether either brother had much hands on experience of life in this type of environment.
William became clerk of the Southland Provincial Council in 1863. Unfortunately he blotted his copybook over some tenders for the Oreti Railway in 1868 and was suspended from duty. Eventually he and another man were found guilty of conspiracy and were each fined one hundred pounds, which was paid immediately. The editor of the Southland News considered this to be a totally inadequate penalty.
Shortly after this he was bankrupt and the following notice appeared in the paper:
NOTICE - Estate of W.H.Aylmer. A first and final dividend of six shillings and threepence in the pound will be payable on the above estate on and after Wednesday 7th instant, at the office of Mr Thomas Perkins of Dee Street.
