• source. Mary-Ann Cook who writes:
About Bartholomew Edye
In Bristol the name Edye is to be found from at least as early as the beginning of the second half of the 16th century, but their connections remain unknown so far.
Bartholomew Edye migrated at an early age from Hatherleigh to Bristol. He appears to have been the first of his immediate family not to have been baptized in the Parish Church of Hatherleigh. In 1732 he was appointed Head Master of Stokescroft School. This school was founded in 1722 by the Unitarian community of the Lewin`s Mead Congregation of Dissenters (founded in 1662), a non conformist sect. The school was a charity for poor children up to the age of 14. For a fee of 3 pence per week they got tuition and food. They had to attend sunday services of Lewin`s Mead.
The building of the Stokescroft School was destroyed during World War II, but a photo exists in the building of the Lewin`s Mead Meeting - as it is known today - in Lewins Mead Road, near the Christmas steps in Bristol. Many members of the family of the next generations remained attached to this Unitarian community, where Sunday services are still performed by ministers, who besides baptism and burials have also the right to perform marriages since the marriage act of 1836.
By a note in the British Museum it is known that Bartholomew Edye could read and write "shorthand" - a rarity in those days.
