James Hale

  • Born: 1840, Romford, Essex England
  • Marriage (1): Sarah Rich in 1874 in Romford, Essex England
  • Died: 1902, Romford, Essex England at age 62

Noted events in his life were:

• source. Mary-Ann Cook who writes:
James Hale was born in the last quarter of 1840 in Romford, the 6th child of James and Lucy Hale, who were living in Mawney Lane, Romford at the time.
By 1851, the family had moved to High Street Romford, although in the 6 censuses between 1851 and 1901 the address is given as High Street 4 times and Waterloo Road twice. It is possible that being on the corner of both roads, the enumerator got the road incorrect, rather than the family moved several times.
James became a shoemaker, and is recorded as such in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses. He married his first wife, Sarah Jane Hanson in Shoreditch in the 4th quarter of 1861. Their first child, Ellen was born in 1863. She was followed by Emma (1865), George (1866), Louis (1867, but he had died by 1971), Arthur (1868), Alfred (1870 - 1905) and Charles (1873). Sarah Jane died in the same quarter that Charles was born - she may have died in childbirth. James then remarried in the second quarter of 1874, this time to Sarah Rich.
James and Sarah number 2 then parented a further 7 children:
Alice Louisa 1876 - married Frank Cakebread (a baker!) in 1901, and had 3 children, Robert (who became an electrician), Audrey and Arthur. Arthur followed his father and became a baker, but loved to go cattle droving on Wednesdays, market day.)
Elisa (1877)
Ernest (1878)
Ada (1880 - remained unmarried)
Jessie Elizabeth (1881 - married Joseph Malyan or Sidney Philips in 1905, and had a son, Arthur),
Frank (1882 - 1956)
Agnes (1884 - remained unmarried, and lived in Waterloo Road next door to the furniture shop with a policeman lodger. Her illegitimate daughter, Lillian, went to live with someone else (she may have been adopted), and later married a policeman and went to live in Dunmow).
Between 1881 and 1891, James became a furniture dealer, and by the time of his death in 1902 he had his own shop at 3 Waterloo Road. In 1871 and 1881, he is shown as living next door to his mother and father, who it would seem lived at No 1 Waterloo Road. For some reason, he left the business to his 13th child, Frank Edward.

James married Sarah Rich, daughter of John Rich and Eliza Chappell, in 1874 in Romford, Essex England. (Sarah Rich was born in 1842 in Romford, Essex England and died in 1908 in Romford, Essex England.)
