Thomas and his new wife arrived into Sydney per 'Bermondsey' 29 April 1855. This ship left Plymouth ENG on boxing day [26 December 1854] and before it's arrival at Sydney had a brand new passenger on board, Sarah Jane BOTTRELL, who had been born on the voyage and was their first child of a family of 12. In the 1865 NSW Government Gazette (page 1109), appears the notice of Insolvency in the "estate of Thomas BOTTRELL, of Mitchell's Creek, engine-driver, lately residing at Sofala". The 'Bathurst Times' newspaper, dated 19 April 1871, reported that Thomas Bottrell, engine-driver of Mitchell's Creek on the date of 10th March 1871 had a woman, Mary Ann Coleman, steal the sum of £5.18.2 (5 pound 18 shillings & 2 pence) from him. The offence was heard at the Bathurst Circuit Court. In the 1872 Greville's PO Directory, Thomas is listed as again residing at Mitchell's Creek near Sofala and his occupation is listed as engineer. Therefore it had to be about 1873/4 that the family moved to Amosfield.
