The 1881 British census records Ernest as an 8 y.o. living at 35 Parsonage Walk, Newington Surrey with his parents and siblings and by 1891 was a butcher living at 7 Lordship Lane, Dulwich. In 1901 he was an oilman's assistant living at 59 Nutfield Road, Camberwell and in 1903 was an insurance agent.

Ernest married Kate Emma Barlow on 1 Jun 1903 in East Dulwich, Surrey England. (Kate Emma Barlow was born on 29 Jul 1879 in Stretham, Cambridgeshire England and died on 4 Jan 1940 in St Johns, East Dulwich, London England.)
