General Notes:
At the time of his marriage in 1839, James was a gentlemans' servant living at 39 Portchester Terrace. He was able to sign his name on the marriage register, but Isabella just made her mark.
By 1845 James had become a mariner and by 1847 a ships' steward. He then joined the Police Force at Peckham on 24th July 1848, he served in P division throughout his time with the police and climbed the ranks to become Inspector on 8th January 1859 at Newington, Surrey.
James was also a Freemason having joined 31st January 1868 Royal Jubilee Lodge #72.
He retired on 2nd October 1873 on account of age and failing health.
