Gifford, along with his brother William Edgar, owned and operated the well known Dorman Brothers Bakery and store business in Taradale from 1907. Their father George would later join them in this business. The store would continue operating until the early 1950's and many of the Dorman family who continued to live in Taradale.

Gifford married Jessie Williamson, daughter of Joseph Williamson and Alice Foster, on 4 Apr 1912 in Congregational Church, Bendigo (Taradale), Victoria Australia. (Jessie Williamson was born in 1882 and died in 1938 in Taradale, Victoria Australia.)
