• note. 203 Brian Kelly notes:
Daniel Clarke was born in 1786 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. He departed England on 2 August 1808 and arrived at Port Jackson, Sydney, NSW, on 4 February 1809 as a free settler while working as a sailor on the whaling ship Spring Grove.

After he married Hannah, Daniel received a grant of land on 30 June 1814 and they tenanted a farm at South Creek, a then isolated region south of Windsor, NSW, on the north-western outskirts of Sydney Town. Daniel worked as a farmer of barley, maize and oats.
In 1827, they moved to a larger selection at Sutton Forest, NSW, in the Southern Highlands where Daniel worked as a grazier. The Belanglo Parish Map shows the original grantee of this portion of land was Anthony Latrielle and the 600-acre grant was called "Clapham". The grant was signed Governor Bourke in 1833 but the deed was never collected by Latrielle. The deed was still inside the Register General's office many years later, but having been signed and sealed but not delivered, it was inoperative. It is not known if Daniel Clarke had a license to occupy "Clapham" but he paid quit rent on it (the receipts carefully kept by the family) and his neighbors William Morrice of Comfort Hill and Edward Carter of Golden Vale deposed in 1879 that Daniel Clarke had fenced, occupied and worked it for over 40 years continuously. He also had exercised undisturbed and undisputed rights of ownership to the exclusion of all others, meaning he could therefore claim absolute ownership. When Daniel died in 1869, he left his farm to his daughter Hannah Hinds (Hyndes) and Hannah initiated the application for Torrens Title to Latrielle's Farm, or "Tarramut Bung" as she called it.
The Clarke family became respected early settlers within the region and were extremely active in the community.
Between the birth of Henry and Esther, the 'e' was added to the family's surname \endash thereafter it has been spelt Clarke. The births of all children born before Esther Clarke were registered with the surname Clark. With the exception of Robert, no child born to Daniel and Hannah retained the surname Clark throughout their life.
Daniel died on 18 January 1869 at the Clarke property named "Terramut Bung", Sutton Forest, NSW, aged 82 years. He is buried at All Saints Church of England Cemetery in Sutton Forest.

Daniel married Hannah Stanley on 2 May 1814 in St Matthews C of E, Windsor, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Hannah Stanley was born on 13 Jun 1788 in Deptford, London, Kent England and died in 1854 in Sutton Forest, NSW Australia 203.). The cause of her death was horse-drawn vehicle accident.

• note. 203 Brian Kelly notes:
Hannah and Daniel's Marriage Certificate gives their place of marriage as St Matthews, Windsor, NSW. The marriage occurred on 2 May 1814, but St Matthew's Church (now St Matthews Anglican Church) had its cornerstone laid by Governor Macquarie in October 1817. The church was consecrated in December 1822 with Samuel Marsden conducting the opening service. Therefore, the marriage could not have taken place there. Extensive research by descendants of Hannah indicates that it took place in the Old Shoe Factory in Windsor.
