Arthur Schmidt
Jefferson - Arthur F. Schmidt, 97, of Fort Atkinson and formerly of Jefferson died Thursday, April 2, 1998 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Olsen Funeral Home with the Rev. John Warmuth officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of service Monday.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Evangelical Church or the Lois S. Wurtzler Fund for Ovarian Cancer Research, c/o The University Foundation, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53706.
He was born May 25, 1900 in Jefferson, the son of William and Albertina (Zabel) Schmidt. He married Hilda Goes on May 12, 1928 in Jefferson. She preceded him in death Nov. 14, 1975. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church of Jefferson. He worked for the former Copeland-Ryder Shoe Company for 41 years. He also owned and operated the former Schmidt Grocery and Hamburger Stand (now Armstrong's) in Jefferson for six years. He played semipro baseball with a Jefferson team, the Allens, in the 1920s. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed dancing until his early 90'.
Survivors include two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two nephews; one niece; and other relatives.
Preceding in death was one daughter, Lois Wurtzler; four sisters; Anna Quick, Olga Schmidt, Martha Vandre and Adeline Vingum; and one brother, Richard.

Arthur married Hilda Goes, daughter of Leonard Goes and Emma Emeline Geise, on 12 May 1928.
