Owen Butler worked as a driller in a ship yard on a new ship being built when he fell and was killed in 1876. The accident was the subject of an inquest 7th July 1876 and was reported in the Liverpool Mercury the next day.
She adds:
He was in the service of Messrs Royden, shipbuilders, and on Tuesday was at work on board a new ship in their yard. He was walking along the beams of the main deck , which were four feet apart, when he fell between them to the stage, eight feet below. He was severely injuried and died on Wednesday. It was stated that the deceased ought to have laid a plank across the beams and walked on it. A number of planks were lying about. A verdict of 'Accidental death' was returned.'. Owen was buried at Toxteth Park Cemetery on 8 July.

His death left his wife Mary Ann Ashcroft Butler with five young children aged from about 11 [Frederick] to 5 [Caroline].

Owen, son of Richard and Rhoda, was born in Fringford,Oxfordshire in 1843, moved to Liverpool around 1862, and was father to four children. He died in a shipyard accident age 33 and at least two of his children were then put into workhouses.

Owen married Mary Ann Ashcroft, daughter of Thomas Ashcroft and Unknown, on 2 Aug 1863 in St Peters, Liverpool St, Liverpool, Lancashire England. (Mary Ann Ashcroft was born in 1838 in Manchester, Lancashire England.)
