When Rose was 21 before she got married, she took a ship to Sydney to visit all her brothers and sisters. Living in Perth was a long way for them to be able to see each other. I know the older sister Doris was a good correspondent, her name is written as Doria on the treeofus but I will check with Mum if it is Doris, that is how I remember grandma referring to her. The older sister was the one who kept the family together and up to date with all that was going on. It was sad that her mother Beatrice died young. The story goes that Beatrice thought she was pregnant, but it was early stages of menopause. Beatrice was around 45 going on 46 so the thought was overwhelming for her and she went to get the pregnancy terminated and died from poisoning as it would have not have been legitimate. Zachariah was a bit of drinker and loved to gamble, so it was a bit sad to say the least. Grandma only found out that it was a backyard abortion that killed her when she was in her 40s. When Rose was young she was told she fell off a chair and twisted her bowel and that killed her.

Doris married Joseph Howell, son of William Henry Howell Hathaway and Anne Heatherill, on 24 Mar 1921 in Holy Trinity C of E, Erskineville, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Joseph Howell was born in 1900 in Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria Australia.)
