  General Notes:

William was born round 1809 in Ringmer; England to a Robert and Mary Winton. His death certificate shows he was a native of Lewes; but his tombstone says 'native of Brighton'. He was indentured as a butcher in 1824 to a Edward Goddenof
Seaford. This indenture paper shows that both he and his father were literate.

In 1830 he married Mary Ann Larkin from Ewhurst they had 4 children in England before they migrated to Australia in 1838 on the boat 'Union'. They were accompanied by Nicholas and Sophie Larkin. It is presumed that William came to Austrlia
hoping for an improvement in health. When they first arrived in Australia they went to Sugarloaf, near Menangle where William was a farmer. He never worked a butcher after his arrival in Australia. During William's lifetime Upchurch farm was
rented, then in 1883 it was bought by Harry. It appears William received much help or advice from his brother-in-law, because eventually Upchurch farm was laid out in the same manner as Windmill Hill farm. After William and Mary's arrival in
Australia they had 3 more children.

It is believed that William was a chronic asthmatic as his death certificate says 'Pulmonary Diseasse'. Harry his son reported that his father was an old man at 50, and interstingly asthma has been present in each generation of Wintons since.
William was apparently unable to move around his farm freely due to his ill health and Harry remembered him as always riding a horse while holding a black umbrella over himself for protection from the sun. William was describe as a manwith
bright blue eyes and fair curly hair. He was very muscial.1 HEAL Pulmonary Disease - Chronic Asthsma
