General Notes:
Zoe Cochrane notes: Rose's mother Beatrice died when she was 11 years old. Rose was sent to live in Perth with her Dad's brother Maurice. My mother told me he was still alive in 1939/40 because she bumped into him with my Mum and he said she looked just like Rose. He was very fond of my grandmother Rose. Rose didn't get on well with her Aunty, Florence and left when she was about 18 and went to live with a Jewish family who were dressmakers. Because of the depression, she had to wait four years before marrying my Grandfather Jack. So the record of Maurice dying earlier in NSW doesn't ring true, but further research would need to be done there. My grandparents met in 1930 at Glen Forrest National Park in Perth. All of Rose's siblings lived in NSW. In 2003 Mum and I went to visit her brother Charles Jeffery, but he was taken in by his Mum's brother when Beatrice died, he was only about two years old. Elsie, not Elise, the youngest daughter was put in an orphanage as the two oldest children could not take her and Zachariah my great grandfather could not look after her. Charles was living in Annadale. He loved trains, just like his father Zachariah who used to drive trains. I also remember my grandmother telling me that Richard Hennessy Jeffery dying when he was only about 36 years old helping another farmer gets some bullocks across a river and it was sad that Zachariah never knew his father, but his stepfather was a lovely man who got married to his mother Bridget Taylor. Rose and Jack had four children. She later added: My grandfather's family, the Bastian's came from Cornwall. They travelled across on a ship called the Ascendant, leaving in 1850 and they arrived in Adelaide early 1851. I have all the details at home, so will send that too you, just for out of interest. They changed the name in 1802 from Bastard to Bastian for obvious reasons. Evidently it was a respectable Norman name, dating back to William the Conqueror. We have traced that side of the family back as far as 1717, a place called Crowan, which is not far from where the books of Poldark by Winston Graham were set. They were tin miners, and came to Australia for the gold rush. They made their way up from Adelaide to a place called Harcourt, in the Castlemaine area, a lot of Cornish people went there. When my great grandfather Sampson was getting married, a few of the brothers left Victoria and made their way over to Perth for the gold in Coolgardie and Boulder (near Kalgoorlie). So most of the people with the surname Bastian in WA are all related.
