Certificate in the possession of Mary P Liddicott. **Note: the place of birth was incorrectl Although Fred was born the 4th child, he became in effect the eldest. The oldest son, Bill, was killed at the age of 14. He was working on a building site and was crushed by a falling lift. The 2nd child, Alice Louisa, dies aged 3. Joe ran away. Fred used to go to the Leicester Mercury offices, buy a paper for a halfpenny, take it into town and sell it for a penny. Then he would go and buy 2 papers, and so on. If he worked hard he might go home with sixpence, which he had to give to his mother. Fred started full time work at the age of 14. He left school on the Friday, and on the Saturday started work at Fielding Johnson's factory in Bond St. He was told to sweep up, and was promised he would start learning a trade on Monday. However, when he went in on Monday, he was told to start sweeping again. Fred refused, and asked for the money he had earned on Saturday, and took his labour elsewhere. He worked for a tailor. Then World War 1 broke out. Fred served in the army in France. He learned the importance of always having a clean, dry pair of socks. In March 1918 he married his sweetheart Nellie Martin. To begin with, they lived with her parents. In 1926, they moved to a council house on the new Saffron Lane estate. Fred loved his garden. He also took on an allotment. He grew wonderful vegetables and huge chrysanthemums and dahlias. In the depresson, Fred was out of work, but still did his best for his family. The milkman used to collect coats and suits for cleaning, and bring them to Fred, who would clean them with petrol. This he did in the family kitchen where there was a blazing fire. At one time Fred was very ill with bronchitis and had to go to hospital, where he died. Fortunately, the mortuary attendant heard him cough, and Fred lived another 40 years. He worked as a plasterer's labourer on, among other building, the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the church at Mount St Bernards Abbey,Whitwick. When Nellie became blind, he cared for her until his death at the age of 79. Always hard-working. 1 UID EA9F2DDD20BDDB11C687000C767768B2BC42
