John's father John had been sentenced as a convict and transported to Australia arriving in Sydney on 9 Oct 1813.
John received permission from the Privy Council to travel to Australia. In his petition he stated that he had three children under the age of 6. In return for permission being granted he undertook to make the Government 1000 pairs of convict shoes or serve the Government in any capacity that they may deem.
He sailed alone aboard the ship 'Malabar', arriving in Sydney on 19 Nov 1821. The fate of his wife and three children under 6 is unknown. However, he was noted as a widower when he married Rebecca England in 1823.
John's mother Susannah and his brothers Christopher and Charles had already received their permission from the Privy Council and had arrived in Sydney on the ship 'May Ann' on 19 Jan 1816.
John married Rebecca England, daughter of James England and Mary Stackhouse, in 1823 in St Philips C of E, York St, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Rebecca England was born in 1807 in London City, Middlesex England, christened on 18 Jun 1815 on board the 'Northampton' on way to Australia and died on 9 Aug 1901 in Seven Hills, Sydney, NSW Australia.)
