John came to Australia with his mother Mary and sisters Charlotte and Maria. They were free persons aboard the convict ship 'Lord Melville' which sailed from England on 15 Sep 1816 and arrived in Sydney on 24 Feb 1817. They came to join husband and father Samuel who had been transported for 14 years for possession of forged bank notes.
John ran the family bakery business while his father and brother Thomas made a visit England. He continued working in the town bakery, the family business right up until his death in 1866.
