Richard Southwell, a shearer, was the son of Canberra pioneer Thomas Southwell of Parkwood, who has been called the "father of Methodism in Canberra" and his second wife Mary Croxton. He lived on his own Ginninderra property called "Brooklands" and married Amelia Smith, the daughter of Edward Smith, a farmer and horse breeder of Pialligo station. Together they had nine children (see Fletcer ed. 1993 170). He donated land for the establishment of a school in 1890, known as Brooklands School after his property. (Smith 1975: 32). For many years he was a buyer of rabbits, purchasing 26,000 pairs in 1907 (Gillespie 1992: 144), and he was said to have "carted approximately 2,000 pairs of rabbits each week to the Bungendore freezing works" (Smith 1975: 41). He also won several prizes in ploughing matches, run by the Ginnindera Ploughing Match Association (Gillespie 1992 85-86). He now rests in peace at Weetangera Methodist Burial Ground.
