Sarah Jane Brien

  • Born: 1 Dec 1825, South Creek, Bathurst, NSW Australia
  • Marriage (1): Benjamin Warby on 31 Mar 1846 in St Bartholomews C of E, Prospect, NSW Australia
  • Died: 21 Jul 1868, "Taminick", near Wangaratta, Victoria Australia at age 42
  • Buried: Jul 1868, Wangaratta, Victoria Australia

  General Notes:

Records show Benjamin was baptised by Rev. Thos Reddall. Sarah and Benjamin were married by the Rev. John Troughton (No 28 in Register), and the witnesses to the marriage were James Graham of Campbelltown and Sarah's sister Mary Ann Pearce. Benjamin took over the "Taminick" property from his father on the 01/06/1858 and it did not change hands until the 07.07.1871, nearly 20 months after his death.
When Benjamin died in 1869 he was buried at "Taminick" Station. His remains were later removed to the Wangaratta Cemetery and allegedly re-interred in the same grave as his wife Sarah Jane - no mention of this is on the headstone.

From information received in Wangaratta, there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Benjamin, and that there were persistant rumours that he had been murdered.

Noted events in her life were:

• Baptism, 1 Jan 1826, St Philips C of E, York St, Sydney, NSW Australia.

• source. & Dannielle Smith @ genes who writes:
In 1865, Sarah was at home with her younger children when bushranger Daniel Morgan called and bailed her up and ordered her to make breakfast for him. Benjamin was away at the time, and Sarah was alone with the children. He also wanted to borrow a horse, for his was knocked up. But there was no horse for him, and, after breakfast, he left in the direction, of Peechelba. He held up Peechelba the next morning, and he rounded up all of the people there. But he missed one girl, who was able to send a message to the Police, who then called and shot him.

Sarah married Benjamin Warby, son of Benjamin Warby and Elizabeth Hunt, on 31 Mar 1846 in St Bartholomews C of E, Prospect, NSW Australia. (Benjamin Warby was born on 6 Sep 1825 in Airds, Campbelltown, Sydney, NSW Australia, died on 16 Nov 1869 in "Taminick", near Wangaratta, Victoria Australia and was buried in Nov 1869 in Wangaratta, Victoria Australia.)
