  General Notes:

Lyn Millington notes:
Thomas died after 1856 dying outside of Australia, maybe at Sea. His whereabouts last known at Panama. In a document dated 1898 his children said they had not heard from since 1856 when he had indicated he was coming home.

Noted events in his life were:

• notes. Neil Millington notes:
Thomas turned seven years old on 5th June 1814. About this time his father announced the news of Governor Macquarie's Grant of Land to the convicts who had been emancipated.
He was excited at the prospect of being able to help his father build a new home. Thomas had leaned to read and write and hoped to become a wheelwright on day like his father.
The family thought life would be better out in the country but he wondered how his mother would cope as she seemed to be in poor health of late.
He remembered how upset she had been when his father had been ordered to pull down their home in Hunter Street and re-build it. When the first Governor Phillip had planned the area of Sydney Town the streets had been too narrow so the English Government had decided to make changes. Consequently when the Crown Surveyor arrived in Sydney many of the building had to be demolished. Some were rebuilt, others were not replaced. Captain Forveau issued Thomas' Father a quantity of run and some convict help to rebuild the house further back on his block - rum being the manner of payment at that time in the colony. His mother found the disruption difficult to accept and her health suffered greatly. Later on Mark sold the house to Thomas Clarkson for the princely sum of 45 pounds the date being 1st September 1812. The money he received for the house and he tipping of carts for filling the ground at the soon to be Sydney Hospital plus his work at the lumber yard on the Harbour was to fund his move to Airds, a rural community on the outskirts of Sydney.
Thomas' head was full of stories of warlike aborigines raiding outlaying properties and wondered if they were trued. He had heard of large kangaroos eating farmer's crops and was fearful of these large animals.
They set out in the wagon with their few possessions in 1816 knowing it would be a few days before they reached the settlement of Bunbury Curran.
The sun was hot and beat down relentlessly on the small party as they moved along the track which was the road to Parramatta. Bottle brush and Banksia attracted all kinds of bird life which fluttered down from tree to tree chirping and warbling as they collected insects and honey.
Thomas and his parents rested near various streams along the way taking the opportunity to wade or swim and collect water from the cool pools that formed in the soft Sydney sandstone.
At the end of the day they would make camp and Thomas' bedroom would be a flattened patch of grass with the wagon forming a roof. After several days of travel they arrived at their newly acquired land grant.
At first there was no difference between the property that was Mark's grant and the surrounding scrub but little by little Mark and Thomas Cleared the small trees and undergrowth and soon the little cottage became a reality. Mary gathered berries to make jam and preserves she would also use the soft centre of the cabbage tree palms to cook for good and the strong outside leaves were used for weaving baskets and hats.
They were comfortable in the small house which they named "Eagle Far". Built of crushed shell and lime it was two rooms and in the corner a hob for the fire with a chimney above. But mark was anxious to build the new house which would be much more grand. Thomas had less time to help now as he took up an apprenticeship and became indentured to the Rev. Dunn. The new house became a reality through Mark's hard word and the small help that Thomas could provide.
According to the 1821 Muster (census) Mark Millington was still living on this property. The Sydney Gazette advertised the property for sale at Public Auction on 23rd Jun 1821 as "a substantial dwelling place".
Thomas' mother Mary died about this time, here death was signed as a decline. Thomas Clarkson who owned the adjoining property bought the place and it was later bought by the founder of the Bank of New South Wales.
Thomas and mark then moved to the property of Jane Jayden whom he later married and Thomas became the apprenticed to Reverend Hassel.
According to the Colonial Papers (Sydney Gazette), Jane Hayden grew produce for the Colony.
During the 1825 Muster / census, Mark was living at the Jane Hayden property with wife Jane and 4 children 13 years, 15 years, 17 years, 22 years. The first three of these children would have been sons of James Hayden while Thomas was the son of Mark. The Muster states he was 22 years born in the Colony and a wheelwright of Liverpool. The age is wrong as he was born 5th June 1807 and he would have been 20 or 21 according to the month the census was taken. Mark's house now named 'Escholl House" still stands in the Raby Park area. In 1826 a notice appeared in the Sydney Gazette calling in any debts for Thomas Millington who was leaving on the brig 'Elizabeth" (to we know not where). In 1835 a wedding notice for he marriage of Thomas Millington and Susanna Shipman of Liverpool, Sydney was posted by the Rev. H. B. Assal and Anne Assal of Parramatta (I think the spelling should have been Rev Hassal, who was well known in the area.)
In latter years we find Thomas a Sergeant in the Fourth Regiment at Windsor where he met and presumably married Susanna Shipman. Their son Thomas William was born on 27th august 1836. However nothing is known to us of Susanna and her son, so we presume they died, as four years later, after Thomas was transferred to the fort at Patrick Plains, he met and married Jane Kay (nee Jane Jackson Cross0 on 16th November 1840 at the church of St Andrews, Singleton. Thomas stated that he was a bachelor.
The daughter of Jane and Thomas was born at Patterson in 1842 and she was named Mary Jane.
In 1844 their second daughter was born at Morpeth, namely Victoria Caraline. Unfortunately Victoria died at 18 months of age.
John Thomas 9my Grandfather) was the next child. His entrance to this was on 27th October 1846 at Morpeth.
William Henry Mark, the last child of Jane Millington was born in 1849. Because Thomas had taken up his early trade of wheelwright, he and his family started a small business opposite the Hunter River in the main street of Morpeth and the family lived there for many years.
We are unable to find out what eventually happened to Thomas, but unsubstantiated stories bandied around the family was that he decided to try his luck on the goldfields of California.
Thomas' stepmother, Jane Hayden Millington died in Liverpool Sydney and was buried in that area in behind St Luke's Church of England.
His father, Mark, died 3 months later on 16th June 1853 and was buried in St Stephens Cemetery at Newtown.
Jane Millington eventually married again and was buried at Morpeth as Jane Price.
The small house at Morpeth is still standing and is classified as a Heritage building.
