Miles Batey had been married before. He married Sarah Henderson on 24 July 1865 and she bore him the three children shown above. She died after the 1881 census and on 14 January 1882 Miles married Sarah Oliver at Lanchester Reg ister Office. There is a discrepancy in the age given on her marriage certificate, where she is described as 24 -- in fact, she can only have been 19. Miles Batey was seriously injured in a pit accident (Anne Batey remembers a photograph of him in a wheelchair). He died on 18 December 1907 and Sarah married Henry Bird on 20 February 1909. He had been a lodger. On 3 June 2003 we obtained the marriage certificate for Henry Bird , 40 years, Bachelor, coal miner of Pear Tree Cottages Burnhope to Sarah Batey, 45 years, widower of Burnhope at Lanchester Register Office on 20 February 1909. Henry Bird was son of William Bird (deceased) and Sarah Batey daughter of John Oliver (deceased). Henry Bird and Sarah Batey both made their marks.

Sarah married Miles Batey on 14 Jan 1882 in Lanchester, County Durham England. (Miles Batey was born on 1 Aug 1847 in Pennyfine, Lamesley, Durham England and died on 18 Dec 1907 in Burnhope, Holmside, County Durham England.)
