I understand from my mother that Sidney Herbert was a volunteer fireman and died because he ran into a building that was on fire to rescue a woman and her three children. They were upstairs and he took the hands of two of the children and told the woman who was holding the baby to follow him downstairs, but she didn't. Having rescued the children he went back for the mother and baby, in the meantime water was being hosed onto the building and Sidney was drenched. He died five days later from pneumonia, leaving Eleanor to bring up 5 yr old Minnie (my mother) 3yr old Cissie and six month old Hilda (who was v. ill and almost died at the same time). Eleanor later married Danny Richards and they had David (Linda's Dad) and Thelma.

Sidney married Eleanor (Nellie) Kedward, daughter of Thomas Henry Kedward and Mary Ann Kirch, on 20 Oct 1913 in Ystrad Mynach, Glamorganshire, South Wales UK. (Eleanor (Nellie) Kedward was born on 17 Jun 1897 in Abertillery, Monmouthshire, Wales UK and died on 22 Feb 1994 in Burnham Lodge, Burnham, Buckinghamshire England.)
