James Kedward

  General Notes:

Family story goes that he left home & elder daughter Eliza. Ann brought up the children. His wife Ellen was admitted to Abergavenny Mental Hospital. On checking the records he did admit her so was still around at that time. Although my grandmother thought that it was because he left her with all the children to bring up on her own that she couldn't cope and had to be admitted. Nan (Ellen Kedward) remembers visiting her in the hospital and she always thought Nan's brother was her own and made a big fuss of him. She worked like crazy and always did all the chores - the laundry etc at the hospital. It was very sad. The records at the hospital show she was admitted 24^th August 1891 aged 37 years. She died at the hospital 15 Dec 1939 3:35am. What a long time to be three. These days she would probably have been helped and could have returned home to resume a normal family life. I found a death for James Kedward in Newport which is probably the correct James as they were quite scarce and I know he did move away.

James married Ellen Veal, daughter of James Veal and Ann Tipper, on 26 Aug 1872 in Aberystruth, Monmouthshire, South Wales UK. (Ellen Veal was born in 1852-1853 in England UK and was buried on 15 Dec 1939 in Abergavenny, Gwent, Wales UK.)
