James is the 8th child of this marriage and was born in 1807 as listed despite the mother's age. The previous child George was born in 1801 and the first child Anne was born in 1783

• emigrated. James came to Australia as a convict on board the ship "Prince Regent" in 1827. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for highway robbery in London on 16 November 1826. James was 5' 2", had a ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, a ship tattoo on his right arm and an anchor on his left arm. He worked as a hut keeper until his ticket of leave dated 1836, he then became an assigned servant to a Mr. Lowe, for whom he worked as a stockman. It is here where he met his future bride, the widow Christina McPhail. He became a large land owner in and around the Collie area.


James married Christina McFayden, daughter of Archibald McFayden and Mary Cameron, on 3 Mar 1840 in Abercrombie District, Bathurst, NSW Australia. (Christina McFayden was born on 6 Aug 1814 in Island of Murray, Iona, Scotland UK and died on 19 Mar 1901 in Driel, near Collie, NSW Australia.)
