• note. 275 Jourdan Burke notes:
Mount Vernon house (which was the plantation home of George Washington, first President of the United States. The estate is situated on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, near Alexandria, across from Prince George's County, Maryland) was owned by Julia Burke, the first wife of John Woolfolk Burke (1827-1907), who with Arthur Herbert founded the Burke and Herbert Bank and Trust Company in 1852. The Burke and Herbert Bank is the oldest bank in Virginia. Burke handled the sale of Mount Vernon to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, and the two hundred thousand dollars in cash and securities received by John Augustine Washington when he sold Mount Vernon were in the Burke and Herbert Bank when Federal troops occupied Alexandria in 1861. However Burke moved the funds to his home. Union soldiers searched this house three times for the missing funds, but they didn't find the money. He had hidden it in the soiled clothes basket in his wife's closet until they were able to smuggle it in a basket of eggs across the Potomac River to the Riggs Bank in Washington. The money stayed in the Riggs Bank until after the war.
When Martha Washington died in 1802, Mount Vernon became, in accordance with George Washington's will, the property of his nephew, Bushrod Washington, who in turn bequeathed it to his nephew, John Augustine Washington, from whom it passed to a son of the same name. By the middle of the nineteenth century, Mount Vernon was in very bad shape, and the family did not have the funds to maintain it properly. Both the federal government and Virginia declined to purchase the deteriorating estate from the Washington family. Miss Ann Pamela Cunningham (1816-1875) recognized the need to preserve Mount Vernon, and founded the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, the oldest national preservation organization in America, in 1853. The original members of the Association raised $200,000 in a nationwide campaign to purchase the mansion, outbuildings, and 200 acres. Since 1858 the tract has been enlarged to nearly 500 acres, an area sufficient in size to insure the property against undesirable encroachments. Mount Vernon has been restored and is operated today by the Association without funds from federal or state governments. It is the nation's most visited historic home.
The History of Burke & Herbert Bank
In 1852, John Woolfolk Burke and Arthur Herbert opened the doors to Burke & Herbert Bank on the corner of Prince and Lee Streets. We were the third bank to open in the city.
In our early years, our services ranged from the sale of stocks and real estate on commission to the purchase of land warrants for tracts in the West.
Our activities included the purchase and sale of bank notes and coin, the collection of sight and time bills, the negotiation of loans, bonds, and the buying and selling of stocks and other public securities, on commission. In fact, we had accounts and real estate listings five days after we opened our doors.
Prior to our incorporation in 1933, Burke & Herbert Bank was operated for 81 years as a private partnership with no government regulation or supervision. And thanks to the foundation of foresight, good judgment and integrity laid by messieurs Burke and Herbert, we are now the oldest bank in Virginia.
Today Burke & Herbert Bank & Trust Company has more than $2 billion in assets and 25 branches throughout Northern Virginia. From personal and business banking to investment management and trust services, our broad range of products continually evolves with the changing needs of our customers. In this way, we deliver modern banking solutions while maintaining our commitment to excellence in banking, customer satisfaction and the community.
Burke & Herbert Bank's walls have provided a safe place for generations of families. While outside the competition has failed, merged, acquired, and been acquired, customers have come here to forge life-long relationships. With our help, these generations have been able to fulfill their dreams of building new homes and businesses to secure a life for future generations.
Burke & Herbert Bank is living history in the heart of Alexandria-an institution that, since 1852, continues to maintain the financial heartbeat of the city.

Julia married John Woolfolk III Burke, son of John Muse Burke and Sophia Frances Wooffolk, before 1858.275 (John Woolfolk III Burke was born on 21 Jan 1825 in "Ivy Mount", Caroline County, Virginia USA and died on 8 Nov 1907 275.)
