He emigrated in 1858 on board the "Castilian" with other family members, arriving in Sydney on 13 June 1858. James Betts died on 3 February 1887 at West Kempsey, NSW Australia and the cause of his death was recorded as haemipagia (a Stroke). James had been paralysed for 18 months prior to his death.


James married Frances Goodchild on 12 Jan 1837 in Little Thurlow, Suffolk England. (Frances Goodchild was born circa 1816 in Little Thurlow, Suffolk England and died on 1 Aug 1847 in Stretchworth, Cambridgeshire England 343.). The cause of her death was Typhus.
