He emigrated in 1858 on board the "Castilian" with other family members, arriving in Sydney on 13 June 1858. James Betts died on 3 February 1887 at West Kempsey, NSW Australia and the cause of his death was recorded as haemipagia (a Stroke). James had been paralysed for 18 months prior to his death.
