Mary Ann Chapple

  • Born: Jul 1845, Redruth, Cornwall England 337
  • Marriage (1): William Paull on 8 Apr 1868 in Redruth, Cornwall England
  • Partnership (2): Francis Chipman circa 1864
  • Died: 17 Sep 1938, 15 Marlborough St, Perth, Western Australia at age 93
  • Buried: 19 Sep 1938, Pinjarra cemetery, C of E section, Western Australia

Noted events in her life were:

• source. Roger Size who is her g g grandmother & who writes that she worked in the Lower Cornish Tin Mines at 8 y.o. She was unable to sign her name and that her older brother in New Zealand sent fare money to come from New Zealand
He also wrote:
My great great grandmother was Mary
Ann CHAPPLE, who was raised with Jame CHAPPEL and his siblings in Cornwall
England. James paid for Mary Ann and her husband, William PAULL, to move
from New Zealand to Ballarat around 1872. Both families then moved to Moonta in Sth Australia around similar dates and then onto Wetern Australia. The CHAPPEL birthday book (presented to Sarah CHAPPEL) lists many of Wm & Mary Ann's children.
He also notes:
You need to know that Mary Ann was raised by Elizabeth CHAPPLE, but is unlikely to be her daughter. Mary Ann was born around 8 years after Elizabeth's last born child, Eliza(beth) Jane b 20 Oct 1837. Mary Ann was born circa 1845 (per 1851 census record) after the family returned to Illogan/Redruth from Devon. Elizabeth CHAPPLE's husband, Richard CHAPPLE, died 29 Sep 1841 at Ugborough, DEVON, so he can't possibly be the father. I have his DC and the 1841 Devon census record if you don't already have this info. My theory is that Mary Ann is a niece to Elizabeth CHAPPLE ie, cousin to James, Thomas, Richard etc. I have a possible BC for her but until I can confirm when she celebrated her birthday I cannot be sure of my theory. Anyway, she was raised as a daughter per 1851 & 1861 census records.
He later notes:
I have a death certificate for Richard CHAPPELL b 1834 d 1898. Richard died of tuberculosis, like his older brother William and father, Richard.
I recently ordered the DC as I am compiling a chart of those in our family that are affected by Alport's Syndrome. A number of Mary Ann's children inherited the gene mutation that leads to Kidney failure, including my great grandfather, William Paull. I also have the mutated gene which is why I have a personal interest.

Are you aware of any descendants of James CHAPPEL having this syndrome? I understand that people may not like to admit to it, but I am just curious. It is an x-link gene mutation, and does not generally pass from father to son, so it is possible only Mary Ann and her older sister, Eliza(beth) Jane were carriers of tyhe mutated gene......presuming they had the same father.

I am resuming my search for Eliza Jane CHAPPLE b Oct1837, to see if any of her descendants are affected. She has been a tough nut to crack and has eluded Chris Unwin and myself for some years now. I am re-checking Chris's notes to see if we have missed anything. If the UK records have been exhausted I will look at Australian records, given James and Thomas emmigrated to Australia in ??? and 1856 respectively. Maybe Eliza(beth) Jane came out with them or around the same time?

He later added this comment:
Francis Paull was born as Francis Chipman. He is the son of Mary Ann Chapple and Francis Chipman, not William Paull. I have the BC and dna matches as evidence
