  General Notes:

Bill Norton notes:
In the winter of 1868-69, William E. Rogers, Albert Molitor and Frederick Denny Larke came to the area to lumber. Mr. Molitor built a cabin, a dock and a mill on the shore, just to the north, on Lake Huron, and that was the start of Rogers City. Itwas named for William E. Rogers, owner of the land on which the village was laid out by his partner, Albert Molitor.

It was given a post office as Rogers' Mills on September 23, 1870 when Frederick Denny Larke became the post master.

The name was changed to Rogers City in January 1872, the to Rogers on January 22, 1895, and then back again to Rogers City on January 25, 1928. Incorporated as a village in 1877 andas a city in 1944.

Frederick married Augusta Louise STREICH in 1875 at Rogers, Michigan, USA.

Frederick Denny Larke was one of the founders of Rogers City. An immigrant from England who had worked as a fur trader for the Hudson Bay Company for a season, Larke first came here in 1868 as a member of a government survey party headed by WilliamRogers, for whom the community was eventually named. Other members of the survey party included John Raymond, a young French-Canadian, and Albert Molitor, a German immigrant of aristocratic bearing who had served as an artillery officer in the Civil War.

When, in 1869, Rogers and Molitor purchased a large parcel of land at what is now Rogers City and formed the Rogers-Molitor Lumber Company, Larke went to work for them. One of his first duties was to recruit a large number of German and Polish immigrants to come north to work as lumberjacks and run the company's sawmill.

In 1876, the talented Larke started the county's first newspaper, the Presque Isle County Advance, which still serves the community today. Large also started Larke's Drug Store at the corner of Third Street and Huron Avenue, in the building nowoccupied by Grulke Hardware.

Nobody was a stronger advocate for Rogers City than Frederick Denny Larke. He fought to make Rogers City the county seat, he tried on numerous occasions to develop a commercial limestone quarry on the present site of the Calcite Plant, and he fought to have a railroad line extended into town. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have continued his legacy of community involvement.

On the left wall of the Larke Bedroom is a striking photo of Larke and his wife, the former Augusta Louise Streich.

This bedroom suite belonged to Frederick Denny and Augusta Larke. All nine of their children were born in the bed.

This was from a newspaper obit to Frederic Denny Larke (1994 <http://thenortonpond.com//calendar.php?year=1994&filterof=all&action=year> Presque Isle, Michigan, USA <http://thenortonpond.com//placelist.php?action=show&parent[0]=USA&parent[1]=Michigan&parent[2]=Presque Isle&level=3>)

Frederick Denny Larke rightfully deserves the honour of being called the founder and organizer of Presque Isle County. He was born in Warwickshire, England September 7 1845 (conflict year was 1842). His father, Richard Denny Larke graduated from and was attached to Guys Hospital in London. It was his desire that the son should follow into the same profession and his education was mapped out by a regular course of hospital study with that end in view, but the medical profession did not appealto him as his ambition was to secure a commission in the British Army.

In this he failed and in 1865 he left home and came to Quebec. A year after his arrival in the new world, he joined a party of traders at St. Paul and in company with the penetrated the wild territory west of Hudson Bay. Here eh remained for nearlya year, trading furs with friendly Indians and securing a stock of valuable furs. He sold his interest in the venture and moved to Detroit to work with a government survey party.
